Project

Quantifying the Pro-Environmental Impacts of Telehealth Tobacco Treatments

Project Description

This project evaluates the dual environmental benefits of providing telehealth treatment for tobacco cessation. Dr. Prochaska and team will quantify the GHG emissions averted by avoiding unnecessary patient travel for health services that can be delivered virtually. The team will also calculate the cumulative cigarette reductions achieved with patients treated in the program. Decreasing demand for tobacco reduces the unit environmental and health impacts of production, use, and waste.

Impact

The team will measure transportation miles avoided and the associated greenhouse gas reductions, calculated as the round-trip distance from the patient’s zip code to the treating clinic.

The team will track reduced tobacco consumption, quantified as cigarette-equivalent reductions summed over time.
