Overview

Darren began collaborating with the Sustainability Program Office in 2018 as he led a major waste prevention and cost savings initiative: streamlining the clinical supply catalog. Darren was the clinical lead in a reorganization of the medical waste management system to maximize safety, ease of use, sustainability and regulatory compliance. Darren has supported the development of a waste sorting game and on-demand sorting guide that provides predictive waste sorting quality data.

He is the Patient Care Services representative on the Sustainable Procurement Work Group and has advised industry groups on sustainability standards for wearable health devices. Darren is an advisor and Champion for the Nursing Sustainability Fellowship, a first at Stanford Health Care and an early model for Nursing Leadership in Sustainability in the hospital setting.

Impact

The Medical waste management program improvements avoided 155 tons of plastic waste and saved over $1 million in one year. Integrating sustainability with cost savings, quality improvement, and leadership development programs is building the culture of sustainability inside of Stanford Health Care.
