Project

Redistribution of Unused and Clean Surgical Supplies

Project Description

Major American hospitals discard on average more than $15 million annually in OR supplies. In the Operating Room, the anesthesiologist, as a frequent user of disposable supplies and equipment, is uniquely situated to address the issue of operative waste. By establishing a perioperative supplies recovery program for donations, and evaluating the path and impacts of donated supplies, this team will evaluate the medical donation supply chain and identify opportunities for improvement.

Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children’s Health donated more than 10,000 lbs. of equipment and 48,000 lbs. of medical supplies in fiscal year 2021. The team will evaluate opportunities to capture additional supplies and maximize waste avoidance.

Impact

Medical supply donations may be tracked by the item, or by pound, to estimate cost and environmental impact.
